The first price wins because it is an anchor: a reference point your brain treats as the starting position for an estimate. Once that position is set, you make only partial adjustments from it, and the final answer ends up closer to the anchor than it should be.
Anchoring works through two mechanisms. First, you consciously or unconsciously accept the anchor as a plausible value and begin reasoning outward from it. Second, you stop adjusting as soon as you reach a number that feels reasonable, and that stopping point is pulled toward the original anchor. The same effect runs through memory: hearing a high number activates other high numbers, making them seem more natural. In a classic demonstration, people spun a wheel that landed on either 10 or 65, then were asked to estimate something totally unrelated, such as a historical percentage. The wheel shifted their answers even though everyone could see it was random and irrelevant.
You look at a car listed at $12,000. You suspect it is worth $10,000, counter at that amount, and settle at $11,000 feeling satisfied. Now imagine the same car listed at $8,000 because a seller needs cash today. You worry that $7,500 is too low, settle at $8,750, and still feel you got a deal. The car has not changed; its market value has not changed. The only difference is the first number on the screen, and that number moved your final price by over $2,000. Anchors do not need to be reasonable to exert this pull.
Knowing an anchor is arbitrary does not neutralize it. The wheel study worked on people who could see the wheel was random. Expertise does not create immunity either: experienced negotiators and appraisers are still pulled by an opening number, because the adjustment is not a deliberate choice you can simply refuse to make. It happens automatically before your reasoning has time to intervene.
An anchor loses power when you already hold a strong internal reference point. If you buy the same item every week and know its exact typical price, a crazy sticker will not move you. Extremes also backfire: a $10,000 price on a $5 coffee mug is so implausible that it is rejected outright rather than used as a starting point. And in negotiation, a strong outside offer can override the other side’s anchor, because your alternative gives you a different, more relevant reference to compare against. The first number rarely wins the moment you can say “compared to what?”
Cram If I ask you the fair price of a guitar, you ignore the sticker and use your own judgement, right?
Rep Not exactly. Your brain locks onto the first number it hears and barely moves from it. That pull has a name.
Cram So you are saying the sticker price steers my answer, even when I know it is just a starting point.
Rep Even when you know. In the classic study people spun a wheel landing on ten or sixty five, then guessed an unrelated number. The wheel still pulled their answers.
Cram That is wild. The wheel is random, everyone can see it.
Rep And it still worked. The anchor does not need to be sensible to drag your estimate. It just needs to arrive first.
Cram So when a shop marks a jacket at two hundred and sells it for ninety, I think ninety is a deal?
Rep Exactly. The original two hundred sets the range, so the ninety feels cheap. The first number does the selling before you even decide.
Cram OK, so in a negotiation, whoever states the first price wins?
Rep Usually. The opening offer anchors the whole back and forth. Both sides end up closer to it than they would have been with no anchor.
Cram How do I stop a random number from pulling me around?
Rep Ask what the number is based on before you react. If the only reason it seems fair is that a bigger number came first, you have caught the anchor.
