When study feels effortless, the brain is usually recognizing material rather than retrieving it. Recognition and recall are different operations, and only recall is what an exam demands. Smooth study sessions tend to produce the illusion of mastery without the underlying memory traces to back it up.
Memory formation has three stages: encoding, storage, and retrieval. Effortless study is shallow on the encoding stage. The material sails past the eyes and produces a sense of familiarity, but few retrieval cues get attached to it. Struggle does the opposite. When you push to pull an answer out without looking, your brain has to rebuild the pathway from scratch, which both strengthens the original trace and lays down alternative routes to the same information. That redundancy is what makes the memory durable.
Effort also changes how the brain weights the encounter. A correct answer you struggled for is a more memorable event than a fluent pass through familiar text, and memorable encounters are more likely to be consolidated into long-term memory.
Imagine two students preparing the same five pages of notes for a week. One rereads the notes each evening and feels increasingly comfortable. The other closes the notes after the first read and spends ten minutes writing down everything she can remember, checks what she missed, then waits a day and does it again. By the end of the week the rereader reports the material as easy. By test day she has largely forgotten it. The retriever finds the exam slow but answerable. The first student's effort felt productive; the second student's effort actually was.
It is tempting to hear desirable difficulty and conclude that any struggle helps. It does not. There is a sharp line between desirable and undesirable difficulty. Desirable difficulty is struggle applied to material you have already understood at least once, while trying to retrieve or apply it. Undesirable difficulty is struggle caused by never having understood the material in the first place: a confusing textbook, a lecture with no examples, a missing prerequisite. That kind of struggle wastes time and builds resentment. The rule is to learn the material first, then make retrieval hard.
Judge learning by what you can produce on a blank page, not by the comfort of a second pass through familiar text.
