The moment after you return to the page feels normal precisely because the residue is interfering in a way you cannot feel, much like a subtle bias you only notice on a test rather than in real time.
People consistently underreport how often they pick up their phone. Monitoring studies that use passive tracking software have found that the gap between what students believe and what actually happens is large, often by a factor of several times. When someone estimates five or six checks an hour, the real count is usually higher. Each check also tends to be longer in practice than in memory; a "few seconds" frequently stretches into a minute once you account for the way one notification leads to another.
