The neural pathways are still active from the study session, so retrieval is easy regardless of whether the memory will survive the week. You are mistaking a warm circuit for a strengthened one.
Memory is not strengthened by re-exposure alone. It is strengthened by the act of pulling information out of storage, especially when that pull requires effort. When you return to material after a delay, some forgetting has occurred, and the struggle to reconstruct the answer forces your brain to re-encode the memory in a more durable form. This is called the testing effect or retrieval practice. Overlearning skips this entirely: you are not retrieving, you are re-reading a still-fresh answer from your working memory. No struggle, no lasting change.
Imagine you study a chapter on cellular respiration and can answer all the practice questions correctly after forty-five minutes. You have hit the point of mastery. Option A: you spend another forty-five minutes drilling the same types of problems. Option B: you stop, and on day two you spend fifteen minutes answering questions from memory, then again on day four, then again on day seven. Both options use the same total time. On a test the next day, Option A will look slightly better, because the material is fresher. On a test three weeks later, Option A's advantage has collapsed, while Option B's spaced retrieval has produced a memory that is still readily accessible. The extra drilling gave you a short-term illusion of mastery at the cost of the long-term benefit you could have had for the same minutes.
People assume that "more practice" and "harder practice" are the same thing. They are not. Overlearning is easy practice: you are repeating what you already know, so it feels productive and reassuring. The practice that actually builds durable memory is deliberately harder, because it happens after a delay when you have partially forgotten. That discomfort is not a sign of failure; it is the signal that the memory is being rebuilt at a deeper level. If your practice never feels effortful, you are probably overlearning.
There are real exceptions. For physical skills that require automaticity, such as typing, playing an instrument, or emergency procedures, overlearning is necessary because the goal is to perform without conscious thought under pressure. The same applies to memorizing facts you must recall instantly, like drug dosages or safety protocols. In those cases, the extra repetitions are not wasted because the target is speed and automaticity, not long-term retention. But for conceptual understanding, problem-solving, and most academic material, the rule holds: stop at mastery, then return later.
