Much academic writing is designed to argue a position, and argumentative writing presents a claim supported by evidence and reasoning while also addressing and refuting counterarguments. Argumentative writing should be distinguished from persuasive writing: argumentative writing relies on logic and evidence to prove a claim, whereas persuasive writing may also appeal to emotions and personal beliefs to convince the reader. A strong argumentative essay acknowledges opposing viewpoints through counterarguments, which show awareness of multiple perspectives and thereby strengthen credibility, and then responds to them with rebuttals that provide evidence or reasoning undermining the opposing view and reinforcing the original claim. Many writers draw on the classical appeals first described in rhetoric. Ethos appeals to the writer's or speaker's credibility and authority, established through expertise, reputation, or ethical character. Pathos appeals to the audience's emotions through vivid language, anecdotes, or imagery. Logos appeals to logic and reason through evidence, statistics, facts, and structured reasoning. Effective persuasion typically combines all three, with ethos establishing trust, logos providing rational support, and pathos motivating the audience to care and act.
Beyond constructing arguments, scholars must evaluate them, a practice known as critical analysis. Critical analysis examines a source or argument in depth, weighing its strengths, weaknesses, assumptions, evidence, and logic, rather than merely describing what it says. Whereas a summary restates what a source argues, critical analysis asks how well the source supports its claims, what assumptions it makes, and what limitations or implications follow. Useful prompts include: What is the author's argument? What evidence supports it? Are there logical fallacies? What assumptions are made? Is the methodology sound? To structure such evaluations, many researchers apply the CRAAP test, a checklist that scores a source on Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, and Purpose. Writers should also be alert to logical fallacies, which are errors in reasoning that weaken an argument, such as ad hominem attacks on the person rather than the claim, straw man misrepresentations of an opponent's argument, and hasty generalizations drawn from insufficient evidence. Two broad patterns of reasoning underlie much of this work. Deductive reasoning moves from general premises to a specific conclusion, while inductive reasoning moves from specific observations to a broader generalization.
Most scholarly work eventually encounters peer review, the evaluation of a manuscript by independent experts in the same field who assess its validity, significance, and originality before publication. In a double-blind peer review, both the authors' and reviewers' identities are concealed from each other to reduce bias. The typical outcomes of peer review are accept, minor revisions, major revisions, or reject, each accompanied by detailed reviewer feedback, and the process matters because peer review acts as a quality control mechanism that validates research methods, checks for errors, and ensures that published work meets the standards of the discipline. Many research papers are also introduced to readers through an abstract, a brief summary of typically 150 to 300 words that covers the purpose, methods, results, and conclusions of the study. A structured abstract often labels these components as Background or Purpose, Methods, Results, and Conclusions. Because the abstract must reflect the entire study, including findings and conclusions, it is almost always written after the paper itself is complete, drawing together the work that the rest of the manuscript has already done.
