Beekeeping is shaped by the seasons. A typical year moves through spring buildup, summer peak, fall preparation, and winter survival. In spring, colonies expand rapidly as flowers bloom and the nectar flow begins. Summer is the peak of activity, when foragers collect surplus nectar and the colony reaches maximum size. A dearth, a period with little nectar, can occur mid or late season and may lead to robbing or starvation if colonies are not fed. Fall preparation focuses on treating varroa, ensuring adequate honey stores, installing mouse guards, and condensing colonies for the cold months. During winter, bees form a winter cluster, a tight ball in the center of the hive that maintains temperatures around \(93-96°F\) (\(34-36°C\)) at its core, even when outside temperatures are far below freezing. Winter losses of 20 to 50 percent of colonies are not unusual in some regions.
Feeding is often necessary to keep colonies healthy. Sugar syrup is the standard liquid feed, given in a 1:1 sugar-to-water ratio in spring to stimulate buildup and a thicker 2:1 ratio in fall to top off stores. Fondant and candy boards, hard sugar cakes placed above the cluster, serve as emergency winter food. A typical colony in a northern climate requires 60 to 80 pounds of honey to survive the winter. Pollen substitutes and patties, solid protein supplements, fill the gap when natural pollen is scarce. Robbing, in which bees from stronger colonies or wasps steal honey from a weak one, can be devastating; it is prevented by reducing entrances, avoiding spilled syrup, equalizing colony strengths, and using robbing screens that confuse invaders while allowing residents to enter normally.
Good beekeeping practice rests on regular inspection and careful record keeping. During the active season, hives are typically inspected every 7 to 10 days. An inspection looks for the queen or evidence of her presence, eggs, larvae, brood pattern, food stores, mites, and signs of disease. A healthy brood pattern is solid, with most cells filled and capped uniformly, while a spotty pattern suggests a queen issue, disease, or pesticide exposure. The so-called 1, 2, 3 day rule is a quick check: eggs that are standing upright are about one day old, while hatched larvae indicate the queen was laying within the past three days. Notes from each inspection, kept over time, become a valuable history of the colony. Beekeepers also practice a number of swarm-management techniques, including checkerboarding, alternating empty and full frames in spring to reduce congestion, and timing splits to coincide with the buildup.
Beekeeping takes many forms and many scales. Backyard hobbyists commonly keep 1 to 5 hives, sideliners keep enough for partial income, and commercial beekeepers may run hundreds to thousands of colonies. A starter setup with one hive, bees, and basic gear typically costs \(\$300-\$600\) or more. New beekeepers are strongly advised to find a local mentor and join a bee club, because beekeeping is regional and complex, and the steepest part of the learning curve is the first year. Beyond honey, beekeepers contribute to agriculture through pollination services: renting colonies to farmers for crop pollination. Almond pollination in California is the largest such event, requiring millions of hives each February. The value of honey bee pollination in U.S. agriculture alone is estimated at more than \(\$15\) billion per year. Supporting bee health also means planting bee-friendly gardens with native flowers, providing sequential bloom throughout the growing season, avoiding pesticides, and supplying clean water. Whether pursued as a hobby, a business, or a way to contribute to ecological health, beekeeping is ultimately a partnership with a wild insect, one that rewards patience, observation, and humility with both ecological insight and a share of sweetness.
