The Properties and Language of Color

To describe color precisely, designers and artists rely on a vocabulary built around three core properties. Hue is the pure spectrum color itself — the name that places it in a family such as red, blue, or green. It is the most basic property of color and is independent of lightness or saturation. Saturation, sometimes called chroma, refers to the intensity or purity of a color: a highly saturated color is vivid and rich, while a desaturated one appears muted, grayish, or washed out. Value describes how light or dark a color is, and it has a powerful effect on readability and visual hierarchy.

Adding white or black to a hue produces familiar color variants. A tint is created by adding white, producing lighter and often pastel shades; pink, for instance, is a tint of red. A shade is created by adding black, producing darker, more dramatic variations; maroon is a shade of red. A tone is created by adding gray — meaning a combination of black and white — which reduces the color's saturation without significantly shifting its lightness. Tones produce subtle, complex, and natural-looking palettes well suited to sophisticated compositions.

Closely related to value and hue is color temperature, the perceived warmth or coolness of a color. In art and design, warm hues are reds, oranges, and yellows, while cool hues are blues, greens, and purples. In photography and lighting, color temperature is measured in Kelvin: low values around 2700 K read as warm and yellow, while high values around 6500 K read as cool and blue. Mastering these properties allows designers to manipulate mood, direct attention, and create the depth needed to make flat surfaces feel three-dimensional.
