Chapter 5 of 7

Food, Drink, and the Body

Mealtimes and refreshments fill a large part of everyday German.

The three main meals are "das Frühstück" (breakfast), "das Mittagessen" (lunch), and "das Abendessen" (dinner). To talk about consuming food or drink, German uses the verbs "essen" (to eat) and "trinken" (to drink), as in "Ich esse gern Pizza" (I like to eat pizza) and "Kinder trinken viel Wasser" (Children drink a lot of water). You might ask "Möchtest du einen Kaffee?" (Would you like a coffee?) at any time of day.

The body is described with "der Kopf" (head), "die Hand" (hand), "der Arm" (arm), "das Bein" (leg), "der Fuß" (foot), "das Auge" (eye), "das Ohr" (ear), "die Nase" (nose), "der Mund" (mouth), and "der Zahn" (tooth). When something hurts, the adjective "krank" (ill/sick) and the noun "der Schmerz" (pain) come in handy, while "gesund" means "healthy." Help is found at "der Arzt" (doctor) or "die Apotheke" (pharmacy), where you can pick up "die Medizin" (medicine).
