Typography is the art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable, and visually appealing. It is one of the most powerful tools in graphic design, shaping not only how text reads but also how it feels. Typography encompasses font selection, sizing, spacing, alignment, and hierarchy — every choice a designer makes about how letters, words, and paragraphs appear on a page or screen.
A typeface is the design of a complete set of characters, while a font is a specific style, weight, and size within that typeface. For example, Helvetica is a typeface; Helvetica Bold 12pt is a font. Although the terms are often used interchangeably today, understanding the distinction helps designers navigate professional tools. Typefaces fall into broad categories. Serif typefaces have small decorative strokes at the ends of letterforms and are considered traditional; Times New Roman, Georgia, and Garamond are classic examples, often used in body text for print where their serifs aid readability. Sans-serif typefaces lack these decorative strokes, appearing clean and modern — Helvetica, Arial, and Futura are widely preferred for digital interfaces. Display typefaces are designed for large sizes like headlines and posters, where expressive or decorative forms create visual impact at the expense of small-size readability. Monospaced fonts give every character the same width, making them ideal for code editors, terminals, and tabular data where vertical alignment matters.
Spacing is a critical aspect of typography. Kerning is the adjustment of space between two specific characters — for example, the letters "AV" often need tighter kerning because their natural shapes leave too much air between them. Tracking adjusts space uniformly across an entire word or block of text, and is often increased in uppercase headings for an airy, elegant look. Leading, pronounced "ledding," is the vertical space between lines of text, measured baseline to baseline. Standard body text uses leading of about 120–145% of font size; for instance, 12pt type typically pairs with 15pt leading. Other typographic anatomy includes the baseline, the invisible line on which characters sit; descenders, the parts of letters like g, p, and y that drop below the baseline; ascenders, the parts of letters like b, d, and h that rise above the x-height; and the x-height itself, which is the height of lowercase letters without ascenders or descenders, measured by the letter "x." Typefaces with larger x-heights, such as Verdana, tend to be more legible at small sizes.
Designers use a typographic scale — a set of harmonious font sizes — to create consistent hierarchy. Common scales include classical progressions such as 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 16, 18, 21, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72 pt, and modular scales based on ratios like \(1.25\) or \(1.618\). Font weight describes stroke thickness and ranges from Thin (100) through Light (300), Regular (400), Medium (500), Semi-Bold (600), Bold (700), to Black (900); varying weight is one of the easiest ways to create hierarchy. A font family groups related typefaces that share a design but vary in weight, width, and style. Most design guidelines recommend using no more than two or three typefaces in a single project — typically one for headings and another for body text — because too many fonts create visual chaos and undermine unity. Other refinements include ligatures, which combine two or more characters into a single glyph (such as "fi" or "fl") to prevent awkward collisions; the ideal line length of \(45–75\) characters per line for body text, with 66 considered optimal; and the careful management of widows and orphans, which are short lines stranded at the top of a page or column. Designers also distinguish legibility, the ease of distinguishing individual characters, from readability, the ease of reading text as a whole — the latter influenced by font size, leading, tracking, line length, and contrast.
