Most medical terms are built from three basic components: root words, prefixes, and suffixes. A root word is the core of a medical term and typically refers to an organ, tissue, or condition, such as "card-" meaning heart. A prefix is attached to the beginning of a root to modify its meaning, often indicating location, time, number, or status, like "pre-" meaning before. A suffix is attached to the end of a root and usually describes a procedure, condition, disease, or practice, such as "-itis" meaning inflammation. Many roots also appear as combining forms with a vowel (usually "o") added at the end to make pronunciation easier when joining with other word parts, as in "cardio-" (heart), "neuro-" (nerves or nervous system), or "hemato-" / "hemo-" (blood).
By combining these three elements, even unfamiliar medical terms can often be decoded. For example, "cardiology" can be broken into "cardio-" (heart) plus "-ology" (study of) to mean the study of the heart. Similarly, "hematology" means the study of blood, and "neurology" means the study of the nervous system. The suffix "-ology" is itself derived from the Greek "logos," meaning word or study, and attaches to many body-part roots to name medical specialties.
Suffixes and prefixes also allow finer distinctions between related conditions. "Hypertension" combines "hyper-" (excessive) with a root referring to tension or pressure, indicating abnormally high blood pressure, while "hypoglycemia" uses "hypo-" (deficient) plus "-emia" (a blood condition) to indicate abnormally low blood sugar. Surgical concepts follow the same logic: "-ectomy" means surgical removal (as in appendectomy), "-ostomy" means the creation of an opening (as in colostomy), and "-otomy" means a surgical incision (as in tracheotomy). Pain is expressed by "-algia" (as in neuralgia, or pain along a nerve pathway). Learning these building blocks transforms a long, unfamiliar term into a logical description of a body part, condition, or procedure.
