Foundations of Photography

Photography is the art and science of creating images by recording light, either electronically with digital sensors or chemically on film. The word itself comes from the Greek roots "phos," meaning light, and "graphé," meaning drawing, so photography literally translates to "drawing with light." This etymology captures the essence of the medium: photographers shape what the viewer sees by directing and capturing light in deliberate ways.

At the heart of every photograph is a camera, a light-tight device that focuses light onto a recording surface through a lens. In modern digital cameras, that surface is a sensor that converts incoming light into electrical signals, which are then stored as image data. Larger sensors, such as the full-frame format, gather more light and preserve finer detail than smaller sensors. The shutter is the mechanism that controls how long that light is allowed to reach the sensor, and the lens shapes the light rays into a sharp image projected onto the sensor or film.

Beginners today can choose from several common camera types. Point-and-shoot compacts and smartphone cameras offer convenience and automatic settings, making them accessible to nearly anyone. Mirrorless cameras and entry-level DSLRs provide interchangeable lenses and more manual control for learners who want to grow their skills. A DSLR, which stands for Digital Single-Lens Reflex, uses a mirror and an optical viewfinder to show photographers the exact scene seen through the lens. A mirrorless camera, by contrast, omits the mirror and previews the image electronically, either through a small electronic viewfinder or the rear LCD.

Traditional analog photography uses film coated with light-sensitive chemicals to record an image, while digital photography uses electronic sensors that capture and store images as data files. Both approaches rely on the same fundamental principle, exposing a light-sensitive surface for a controlled amount of time, but digital imaging makes instant review and post-processing possible. Whichever system a photographer uses, the viewfinder remains a critical tool, allowing the photographer to compose the shot and confirm focus before pressing the shutter.
