Why Cramming Fails (and What to Do the Night Before Instead)

Cramming reliably raises tomorrow's score and reliably collapses a week later. Here is the evidence on massed versus spaced practice, why sleep is part of the study session, and exactly what to do the night before an exam.

Introduction

Almost everyone has done it: seven hours of frantic study the night before an exam, a passable grade the next morning, and by the following week an unsettling blankness where the material used to be. The frustrating part is that cramming is not useless. It works — briefly, narrowly, and at a cost most students never see, because they never get tested on the same material again.

This article explains why that happens, what the evidence actually says, and what to do the night before an exam when spacing is no longer an option.

Massed Practice vs Spaced Practice

Cognitive psychology has a plain name for cramming: massed practice. You compress all your study of a topic into a single unbroken block. The alternative, spaced practice, distributes the same total study time across several sessions separated by hours or days.

The comparison has been run hundreds of times. The definitive summary is the 2006 meta-analysis by Cepeda, Pashler, Vul, Wixted and Rohrer, which pooled 254 studies covering more than 14,000 participants. Their finding was blunt: spacing produced better retention than massing in the overwhelming majority of comparisons, and the advantage grew as the delay before testing grew. Same total minutes, different distribution, substantially different outcome.

Note the crucial detail — the advantage grows with the retention interval. On an immediate test, massed and spaced practice often look similar, and massed practice sometimes even wins. That single fact explains almost everything about why cramming feels like it works.

Why Cramming "Works" for Tomorrow

During a long block of study, the material is sitting in active memory. You have just read it, so it is fluent, familiar, and easy to recognise. That fluency feels exactly like knowing — and if the test is in nine hours, the feeling is close enough to true. Recognition memory holds up over short intervals even when nothing durable has been encoded.

What cramming does not do is create the retrieval difficulty that builds durable memory. Every time you reread a paragraph you already read twenty minutes ago, you retrieve nothing; you simply re-experience familiarity. The memory trace is not strengthened, only re-primed. That priming decays fast.

Why It Collapses a Week Later

Here the forgetting curve takes over. Ebbinghaus's central observation was that forgetting is steepest immediately after learning and then flattens — roughly half to two-thirds of unreviewed new material is gone within a day. A crammed body of knowledge enters that curve exactly once, with no subsequent retrieval to reset it. There is nothing to flatten the decay.

Spaced study, by contrast, puts the material on the curve several times. Each successful recall resets decay and makes the next curve shallower. After four or five spaced retrievals, the same material is decaying so slowly that a month's gap costs you almost nothing. This is not a different amount of work — it is the same work, scheduled to intersect the curve where it does the most good.

So the honest description of cramming is not "cramming doesn't work". It is: cramming buys you one exam and forfeits the semester. If the material is a prerequisite for anything later — and in maths, languages, medicine, and programming it always is — you will pay for it twice.

Sleep Is Not Optional Study Time

The other half of the problem is what students trade away to make room for the cram. Sleep is when the hippocampus replays newly encoded material and gradually hands it to the neocortex for long-term storage. Slow-wave sleep in particular is associated with the consolidation of declarative memory — facts, definitions, dates, vocabulary.

An all-nighter therefore does something worse than making you tired. It removes the biological process that would have converted the evening's study into something retrievable, while simultaneously degrading the attention, working memory, and judgement you need in the exam room. You end up with more material poorly encoded and less capacity to use it.

Practically: a study session that ends at 11pm followed by seven hours of sleep beats a session that ends at 3am, on both retention and performance, in nearly every study that has compared them.

What to Actually Do the Night Before

Assume it is the night before and spacing is no longer available. The goal shifts. You are not trying to learn the material — that window closed. You are trying to maximise what you can retrieve tomorrow morning without wrecking your sleep. That means three rules:

  • Retrieval only. Work through the cards or questions you previously rated Again and Hard. Cover the answer, attempt recall, then check. Do not reread chapters. Do not highlight. Rereading produces fluency, not memory, and fluency is what will betray you tomorrow.
  • No new material. Adding fresh topics at 10pm creates interference with the material you already half-know, and nothing added this late will survive to the exam in usable form. Consolidate what is nearly there instead of thinning your attention across what isn't.
  • Sleep on schedule. Stop at your normal time. The last hour of study you would have squeezed in is worth less than the sleep it costs, and that is true even at the margin.

A reasonable shape for the evening: 45 minutes of hard-card retrieval, a 10-minute break, a second 30-minute pass over whatever you failed in the first pass, then stop. Two focused retrieval passes over your weakest material will outperform four hours of anxious rereading.

What to Do When You Have Two Weeks

With a fortnight's notice the picture changes completely, and the correct answer is boring: put the material into a spaced repetition system and review daily for fifteen minutes. Fourteen sessions of fifteen minutes is three and a half hours — less than a single cram night — and it will leave you with material that is still there in March.

The workflow is simple. Break the syllabus into atomic facts and procedures, one per card. Review before adding new cards each day. Keep the daily new-card count low enough that the review queue stays under fifteen minutes. Front-load the difficult material so it gets the most repetitions. By the night before, your queue is nearly empty and the evening genuinely is uneventful — which is the point.

An Honest Note: If You Must Cram

Advice that ignores reality gets ignored. Sometimes the exam is tomorrow, the material is untouched, and spacing is a lecture you do not need right now. In that case, cram — but cram correctly.

The single highest-leverage change is to replace rereading with self-testing. Close the notes and write down everything you can remember about a topic on a blank page, then open the notes and mark what you missed. Repeat on the gaps. This is uncomfortable and slow and feels less productive than rereading, which is precisely why it works: the difficulty of retrieval is the mechanism. A crammed session built on retrieval will still fade faster than spaced study, but it will hold through tomorrow far more reliably than a session built on rereading — and some of it will survive the week.

Second: sleep anyway. Cutting the session short to protect sleep is not a compromise, it is an optimisation.

Does cramming ever beat spaced study?

On an immediate test, occasionally yes — massed practice can edge out spaced practice when the delay between study and test is very short. That advantage disappears within roughly a day and reverses sharply after that. If the only thing you will ever need the material for is a test in the next few hours, cramming is defensible. That is almost never the actual situation.

How long before an exam should I stop studying?

Stop in time to keep your normal sleep schedule, and prefer stopping after a retrieval pass rather than mid-reading. A common practical rule is to finish active study at least an hour before bed, so you are not lying awake rehearsing. The last-minute glance at a formula sheet in the morning is fine — it is short-term priming, and short-term priming is exactly what you need at that point.

Is rereading my notes really useless?

Not useless, but badly overrated relative to the time it consumes. Rereading is reasonable for a first pass when you genuinely do not yet know the material, and for repairing a specific gap you just discovered by failing to recall it. It is a poor default because it produces a strong feeling of knowing with little durable encoding. As a rule: read once to understand, then spend all remaining time retrieving.
