The "what is" monoculture: 68% of flashcards test recall, almost none test why
Two out of every three flashcards on the platform ask a single shape of question: "What is X?" or "What are X?" — a definition or a fact to retrieve.
Only 2.5% ask "why" (causal understanding), 1.6% ask you to define or explain something in your own words, and fewer than 1 in 500 cards use true/false or fill-in-the-blank formats.
This is the gap between remembering and understanding. Recall cards build durable memory for facts — that part works. But they rarely force the "why" that turns a fact into a mental model you can use. The takeaway isn't to abandon recall; it's to add the "why" questions on top of it.

Flashcards abandoned language learning — programming owns the deck
Flashcards were invented for language drills. Yet on a modern flashcard platform, language decks are just 7% of all cards — while programming alone is 16%, with AI and other tech subjects close behind.
The biggest decks on the site aren't vocabulary lists. They're programming concepts, AI terminology, databases, and cloud architecture. Flashcards have become a serious technical study tool — the classic "word on one side, translation on the other" is now the minority.

The one-word flashcard is dead
The stereotype is a word on the front, one word on the back. The data says otherwise. The median answer is 18 words — a full sentence or two. Only 6.6% of answers are five words or fewer. More than a third run past 20 words.
And the content is technical: 14% of cards contain code, and 5% contain math notation. These aren't vocab drills — they're compressed technical explanations you quiz yourself on until they stick.
The modern flashcard is best thought of as one atomic idea per card, with just enough explanation to be self-contained. That's also what the science recommends: short, specific cards with one retrievable fact or concept each.
What this means for how you study
Add "why" to your recall
Recall cards build memory; "why" cards build understanding. After you can retrieve a fact, ask yourself why it's true — self-explanation is one of the highest-leverage techniques.
Space it, don't cram it
One fact per card, reviewed at expanding intervals, beats re-reading. That's the whole game.
Technical subjects thrive
Code and math cards are some of the best-reviewed material on the platform — flashcards handle compressed technical knowledge especially well.
