Fungi are not plants because they belong to a separate branch of life with a different way of getting carbon: they absorb food after digesting it outside their bodies, while plants make their own food from sunlight.
Biologists classify organisms by ancestry, not by where they live or how they look. Fungi and animals share a more recent common ancestor than either shares with plants. DNA comparisons place fungi and animals together in a group called opisthokonts, which also includes some single-celled organisms; plants belong to a completely different branch. One visible clue is in the cell wall: plant walls are made of cellulose, while fungal walls are made of chitin, the same polymer that gives insect shells their stiffness. Another clue is nutrition. Plants are autotrophs: they build sugars from carbon dioxide and sunlight. Fungi are heterotrophs: they must obtain organic carbon from other organisms.
The fungal way of eating is external digestion. A fungus grows as a network of microscopic threads called hyphae. It releases enzymes into its surroundings that break down complex molecules into smaller ones, then absorbs the dissolved products through its cell membrane. An animal digests food inside a gut and absorbs it through the intestinal wall. A fungus digests in the ground and drinks the leftovers. This is why fungi need no sunlight and no chlorophyll; they get carbon from their food, not from the air.
This recycling role is why forests do not disappear under their own dead leaves. The same enzymes work in soil, where hyphae weave through dead leaves and roots. Without fungal breakdown, nitrogen and phosphorus would remain locked in organic matter, and new growth would starve.
The mushroom is not the organism. It is a temporary reproductive structure, like a fruit. The main body is the mycelium, a web of hyphae that can spread widely through soil or wood. One known individual in Oregon covers thousands of acres underground. Nor are fungi “plants that lost chlorophyll.” They never had chlorophyll; their ancestors diverged from the line leading to animals, not from the line leading to plants.
Not all fungi are decomposers. Mycorrhizal fungi form partnerships with plant roots, exchanging soil nutrients for sugars; lichens are a fungus living with a photosynthetic alga or cyanobacterium. Some fungi are parasites that attack living hosts, and some, like yeasts, are single-celled and never form hyphae or mushrooms. The one constant is that fungi are not plants. How they live varies enormously across the kingdom.
