How the Mind Processes Information

The information processing model compares the mind to a computer and traces how information flows through three stores. Sensory memory briefly registers incoming stimuli, holding them for less than a few seconds until attention determines what enters working memory. Working memory is the limited workspace that temporarily holds and manipulates information; it can manage only about \(7 \pm 2\) items and retains them for roughly 20-30 seconds without rehearsal. Information that is encoded effectively can be transferred to long-term memory, a relatively permanent store of essentially unlimited capacity that is organized into declarative knowledge (facts and concepts) and procedural knowledge (skills and routines). Encoding is the process of transforming information into a form that can be stored in long-term memory, and is enhanced by strategies such as elaboration and organization.

Effective encoding is central to durable learning. Strategies such as elaborative rehearsal (connecting new information to existing knowledge), organizing material into meaningful structures, spaced practice distributed across time, and active retrieval all strengthen retention more than rote repetition. The spacing effect shows that distributing study sessions yields better long-term learning than massing practice into a single session, and the testing effect, or retrieval practice, demonstrates that actively recalling information from memory strengthens learning more effectively than simply re-reading material. Schema theory complements this view by explaining that knowledge is organized into mental frameworks, or schemas, that help learners process, store, and retrieve information. Teachers can activate relevant schemas before instruction using advance organizers or K-W-L charts, and when new information conflicts with existing schemas, the resulting cognitive dissonance motivates accommodation and schema revision. Schemas also help learners make predictions and fill in gaps, although they can entrench misconceptions when they are inaccurate.

Metacognition—awareness and regulation of one's own thinking—allows learners to use these strategies deliberately. It consists of metacognitive knowledge, such as knowing which strategies work for which tasks, and metacognitive regulation, the active planning, monitoring, and adjustment of one's approach. A student who pauses after reading a paragraph and asks, "Did I understand that?" before re-reading if necessary is engaging in metacognitive monitoring, which helps learners become self-directed, identify effective strategies, and adjust their approach when comprehension breaks down. Cognitive load theory, developed by John Sweller, adds another constraint: because working memory is limited, instruction must manage three types of load. Intrinsic load comes from the inherent complexity of the material, germane load reflects the effort devoted to schema building, and extraneous load arises from poor instructional design. Teachers can reduce extraneous load by eliminating unnecessary information, using clear visuals, integrating text with diagrams, and avoiding the split-attention effect that occurs when learners must mentally integrate physically or temporally separated sources of information. Finally, transfer of learning, the application of knowledge from one context to another, depends on similar principles: near transfer applies learning to closely related situations, far transfer applies it to very different contexts, and positive transfer occurs when prior learning facilitates new learning, while negative transfer occurs when prior learning interferes with new learning. Teachers promote transfer by teaching for understanding rather than memorization, using diverse examples, and helping students identify underlying principles.
