A large body of research shows that what students believe about themselves profoundly shapes how they engage with learning. Carol Dweck distinguished between growth mindset, the belief that intelligence and abilities can be developed through effort and persistence, and fixed mindset, the belief that intelligence is a static, innate trait that cannot be significantly changed. When teachers praise effort, they tend to encourage a growth mindset and resilience in the face of difficulty, whereas praising intelligence often fosters avoidance of challenges because students fear revealing limitations. Closely related, Albert Bandura's concept of self-efficacy refers to an individual's belief in their ability to succeed at specific tasks. Self-efficacy develops primarily through mastery experiences, which provide direct evidence of competence, and is also strengthened by vicarious experiences such as watching similar others succeed, verbal persuasion, and managing physiological and emotional states like anxiety.
Beyond beliefs about ability, the type of motivation driving engagement matters. Intrinsic motivation is the drive to engage in an activity because it is inherently interesting or satisfying, while extrinsic motivation is driven by external rewards or the avoidance of punishment. The overjustification effect warns that external rewards can undermine intrinsic motivation, causing students to lose interest in activities they once enjoyed. Self-Determination Theory, developed by Deci and Ryan, identifies three basic psychological needs that sustain motivation: autonomy (feeling in control of one's own behavior), competence (feeling effective), and relatedness (feeling connected to others). On a continuum, SDT distinguishes fully autonomous intrinsic motivation from forms of extrinsic motivation that range from external regulation to fully internalized, integrated forms. When teachers offer meaningful choices, explain the rationale behind tasks, and minimize controlling language, they nurture autonomy and help students internalize the value of learning.
Maslow's hierarchy of needs complements these views by suggesting that students cannot attend to higher-order learning unless their basic needs for physiological safety, love and belonging, and esteem are met; schools address these needs through predictable routines, anti-bullying policies, and supportive relationships, while self-actualization represents the realization of one's full potential and creativity at the top of the hierarchy. Finally, attribution theory, developed by Bernard Weiner, examines how students explain the causes of success and failure along three dimensions: locus of control (internal versus external), stability (stable versus unstable), and controllability (controllable versus uncontrollable). Attributing failure to a controllable, unstable factor such as lack of effort promotes persistence, while attributing it to a stable, uncontrollable factor such as low ability leads to maladaptive patterns and learned helplessness, in which students come to believe their actions have no effect on outcomes. Teachers can foster more adaptive patterns by modeling effort-based explanations, providing specific feedback, and ensuring that students experience success through achievable challenges.
