Research by Sylvia Ann Hewlett and the Center for Talent Innovation has put rough numbers on what senior leaders actually value. In that study, gravitas, the substantive dimension of sound judgment, decisiveness, integrity, emotional intelligence, and the courage to take a position, accounted for about 67% of how leaders rate executive presence. Communication accounted for roughly 28%, and appearance, including grooming, attire, posture, and physical health signals, only about 5%. The implication is that polished delivery and visual polish matter, but judgment under uncertainty matters far more, and confidence without judgment erodes trust quickly once decisions are tested by reality.
Perhaps the most important framing is that executive presence is a set of practiced behaviors, not an innate personality trait, and that it compounds over time. Presence grows when behavior, communication, and follow-through align repeatedly across many small interactions, not in a single dramatic moment. Doing what you said you would do, when you said you would do it, is consistently described as the most underrated factor in long-term presence. The simplest durable habit combines thorough preparation, clear speech, steady composure, and a constant return to what matters most.
