A seedling is a young plant grown from seed, and germination is the process by which a seed begins to sprout. Some seeds have built-in requirements that gardeners must meet. Stratification provides a cold treatment that simulates winter and breaks dormancy in certain species. Scarification scratches or nicks tough seed coats to allow water and gases to penetrate, speeding germination. Once sprouted, seeds can be handled in two main ways: direct sowing means planting seeds directly in the garden where they will grow, while starting indoors involves germinating seeds in containers under controlled conditions before transplanting them outside.
Plants started indoors need a transition period called hardening off, during which they are gradually exposed to outdoor conditions over a week or two to avoid shock. Transplanting itself is the act of moving a plant from one location to another, whether from pot to garden or from one bed to another. Beyond seed-based propagation, gardeners create new plants through several methods. Cuttings involve rooting a piece of stem in water or soil, sometimes with bottom heat to speed root development. Division splits a mature clump into smaller plants, layering bends a stem to the soil so it roots before being separated, and grafting joins two plant parts—a rootstock and a scion—to grow as one, commonly used for fruit trees and roses.
Timing matters throughout this process. The first frost date and last frost date in your area define the safe planting window for tender species. Frost-tender plants are damaged by freezing temperatures, while hardy plants tolerate cold winters in your zone. Cool-season crops can be planted earlier, but warm-season crops like tomatoes and peppers must wait until soil and air have warmed. Successful propagation also relies on observation: noticing which seeds sprouted quickly, which cuttings rooted well, and which transplants thrived builds experience that no manual can replace.
