Soil, Compost, and Nutrition

Soil is far more than dirt; it is a living mixture of mineral particles, organic matter, water, air, and countless organisms. The three main soil textures are sand (large, loose particles), silt (medium particles), and clay (fine, dense particles). Loam is the gardener's ideal—a balanced mixture of all three along with organic matter—offering both good drainage and moisture retention. A simple jar test, in which soil is shaken with water and allowed to settle in layers, reveals the proportions of each texture. Equally important is soil pH, a measure of acidity or alkalinity on a scale from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral. Most plants prefer slightly acidic to neutral conditions in the \(\text{pH}\) range of 6.0 to 7.0. Blueberries, azaleas, rhododendrons, and blue hydrangeas prefer acidic soil, while lavender, lilac, and pink hydrangeas prefer alkaline conditions. To raise pH, gardeners add lime; to lower it, they add elemental sulfur or organic matter such as peat moss. Soil testing through a lab every two to three years reveals nutrient levels and pH, guiding amendments.

Plants need three primary nutrients, often referred to as NPK: nitrogen for leafy growth and green color, phosphorus for roots, flowers, and fruits, and potassium for overall plant health and disease resistance. Secondary nutrients include calcium, magnesium, and sulfur, while micronutrients such as iron, manganese, zinc, boron, copper, molybdenum, and chlorine are needed in tiny amounts. Fertilizers supply these nutrients, either as organic materials from natural sources or as synthetic products manufactured chemically. A bag labeled 10-10-10 contains 10% nitrogen, 10% phosphorus, and 10% potassium by weight. Slow-release fertilizers feed plants gradually over weeks or months, while foliar feeding—spraying diluted nutrients on leaves—provides quick absorption. Over-fertilization carries risks of plant burn, water pollution, and weakened growth, so more is rarely better.

Building soil organically is the foundation of long-term garden health. Composting decomposes organic matter into a nutrient-rich amendment, and it works best with a roughly \(1{:}3\) ratio of "greens" (nitrogen-rich materials like vegetable scraps, grass clippings, and coffee grounds) to "browns" (carbon-rich materials like dry leaves, cardboard, straw, and wood chips). Materials to keep out include meat, dairy, oils, diseased plants, and pet waste. Hot composting, an active method that reaches \(130{-}160\,^\circ\text{F}\) (\(54{-}71\,^\circ\text{C}\)), works quickly but requires turning the pile. Cold composting is slower but easier, simply letting organic matter decompose passively. Vermicomposting uses earthworms, typically red wigglers, to break down scraps, and leaf mold—compost made primarily from decomposed leaves—is an excellent soil conditioner. Beneath the surface, a thriving microbiome of bacteria, fungi, and protozoa, along with mycorrhizal fungi that form symbiotic relationships with roots and earthworms that aerate soil and create nutrient-rich castings, transforms ordinary ground into a living, fertile ecosystem. Cover crops such as clover, rye, vetch, and buckwheat protect and improve soil, sometimes tilled in as green manure, and no-till gardening preserves structure and microbiome by avoiding disturbance.
