What Metabolism Actually Is

Metabolism is not one dial in your body; it is the total of every chemical reaction that keeps you alive, and its speed is mostly set by your size, age, and muscle mass. The resting burn you hear about is only one part of the story, and it is far less variable than you might think.

Your body spends energy in three broad ways: resting metabolism (keeping your heart beating, lungs moving, cells repairing), the work of digesting food, and physical activity. The last category includes exercise, but it also includes a hidden giant called NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis). NEAT covers everything from tapping your foot to carrying groceries. This is where real differences between people show up: a person who moves restlessly around the house all day can burn far more than one who sits still, even if both are the same weight and size. The size of that gap is not fixed, but it is routinely bigger than any difference in resting metabolism.

To make this concrete, imagine two women who both weigh 70 kilograms. Their resting metabolisms might differ by only 100 to 200 calories per day. One of them, however, paces while talking, stands while waiting, and takes the stairs instead of the elevator. The other sits for most of the day and rarely fidgets. The active one could burn an additional 500 to 800 calories just through those small, unplanned movements. That is the difference between maintaining your weight and gradually gaining it, without any diet change at all.

The common misunderstanding is blaming a slow metabolism for weight gain when the real culprit is a mismatch between the energy you take in and the energy your body spends. People consistently underreport what they eat, often by a large margin, so “barely eating” can actually be a normal or even generous intake. The reverse is also true: someone who seems to eat anything may be moving more unconsciously and eating smaller portions than they appear to. Neither case requires a mystical metabolic difference.

The idea of metabolism as a curse does not apply when you are actively losing weight. In fact, that is the one situation where a real slowdown happens. When you lose weight, your body adjusts by lowering its resting burn and making you move less spontaneously. This is adaptive thermogenesis, a survival mechanism left over from times of famine. It means the more you lose, the harder your body works to defend the new, lower energy level. Crash diets worsen this because they burn muscle, and muscle is the tissue that costs your body energy just to exist.

Finally, metabolism is not something you can trick with foods. Spicy pepper, green tea, and caffeine produce changes so small they have no practical effect on weight over a day. The levers that actually matter are preserving muscle through strength training, eating enough protein to avoid muscle loss, and increasing overall movement throughout the day. There is no magic number and no fixed curse; the system responds to what you do, not to what you worry about.
