Why Bees Matter More Than Honey

Bees matter more than honey because honey is a byproduct of what they do: pollination. A plant that receives pollen from a bee can set fruit and seed; the honeybee's value to us is the service that enables much of the food supply.

The mechanism behind the service

When a bee drinks nectar from a flower, its hairy body becomes dusted with pollen. Because a bee’s body carries a slight static charge, pollen grains stick easily. On the next flower, some of those grains rub off onto the sticky stigma, the female part of the flower. Fertilized ovules become seeds, and in many plants the surrounding tissue swells into the part we eat: the apple, the almond, the squash. Honeybees are especially effective because they show floral constancy. A forager tends to stick to one flower type during a single trip, so the pollen it carries is usually the right species for the next blossom it visits.

The scale of the work

The numbers in almond orchards make this concrete. Every February, California’s almond groves require roughly two million honeybee hives, most of them trucked in from across the country. That migration exists for pollination, not for honey. Without it, almond yield collapses. A smaller grower, say an apple grower with a few acres, faces the same logic in miniature: renting several colonies for the bloom period is what turns a patchy set of blossoms into a full crop of fruit. The fee paid per hive reflects the value of pollination, not the value of honey the colony will make.

The common misunderstanding

Many people hear “bees” and think only of honeybees. But honeybees are domesticated livestock in much of the world, not wild natives. Wild pollinators, especially bumblebees and solitary bees, carry a large share of pollination in natural areas and some crops. Colony collapse and bee declines are not simply a problem of missing honey jars. They are a sign that managed bees and wild pollinators alike are being squeezed by pesticides, poor nutrition, and habitat loss. Protecting bees means maintaining healthy land and diverse pollinator communities, not just keeping more hives.

Where the idea does not apply

Not every plant depends on bees. The world’s staple calories come from wind-pollinated grains like wheat, rice, and corn, which do not need insect help. Some crops also resist honeybee pollination: tomatoes and peppers hold pollen in closed anthers that require buzz pollination, a behavior performed by bumblebees but not by honeybees. So the case for bees is not that every bite of food would vanish without them. It is that the variety of the human diet, the nuts, fruits, vegetables, and other crops that make meals interesting and nutritionally rich, is built on a pollination service that no chemical process can replace cheaply.

Cram Pollination just means they help flowers grow. How big can that really be?

Rep About 75 percent of the crops humans eat depend on animal pollinators. That is one in every three bites of food.

Cram But not all of that is honeybees. There are bumblebees, butterflies, even beetles.

Rep Correct. Native pollinators do a lot. But honeybees are the only species you can move in managed hives to pollinate specific fields on demand.

Cram So colony collapse is about more than losing honey.

Rep It is a food supply risk. Almonds alone need 2 million hives every February. Without enough bees, crops fail or prices spike.

Cram Could we just pollinate by hand if bees disappeared?

Rep Hand pollination works in a greenhouse but costs about 10 times more. Grocery bills would rise across the board.

Cram So the real value is hidden in every crop they touch.

Rep Exactly. An estimated 235 to 577 billion dollars in global crop output depends on pollinators every year. Honey is just the tip.

Cram That is a much bigger problem than I thought.

Rep Protecting bees is not about saving honey. It is about keeping the food chain stable.
