Social Learning, Motivation, and the Self

Behaviorism long treated the mind as a black box, but later theorists expanded the field by recognizing that learning involves mental processes, beliefs about the self, and social context. Albert Bandura's social learning theory represents a critical bridge, proposing that people learn through observation, imitation, and modeling—not just through direct experience. This was powerfully demonstrated in Bandura's Bobo doll experiment (1961), in which children who watched an adult behave aggressively toward an inflatable doll subsequently imitated that aggressive behavior when given the chance. For observational learning to occur, Bandura identified four necessary processes: attention (noticing the behavior), retention (remembering it), reproduction (being able to perform it), and motivation (having a reason to imitate it). A key supporting mechanism is vicarious reinforcement, where seeing someone else rewarded for a behavior increases the observer's likelihood of performing it. Bandura also introduced the concept of self-efficacy, one's belief in their ability to succeed in a specific situation—high self-efficacy is associated with greater effort, persistence, and resilience in the face of obstacles.

The opposite side of self-efficacy appears in learned helplessness, studied by Martin Seligman, where repeated exposure to uncontrollable aversive events causes organisms to stop attempting to escape even when escape becomes possible. This phenomenon became an influential model for understanding human depression, illustrating how perceived lack of control can generalize into passive resignation. Motivation itself takes many forms, and Abraham Maslow proposed a famous hierarchy of needs arranged as a pyramid: physiological needs at the base, followed by safety, love and belonging, esteem, and finally self-actualization at the peak. Self-actualization represents the fulfillment of one's full potential and is marked by creativity, spontaneity, moral integrity, and acceptance of reality. Maslow argued that lower needs generally must be met before higher ones become motivating forces.

More contemporary approaches to motivation include self-determination theory (SDT) developed by Deci and Ryan, which holds that intrinsic motivation is fueled by three basic psychological needs: autonomy (a sense of control over one's actions), competence (a feeling of mastery), and relatedness (connection with others). This framework draws a sharp distinction between intrinsic motivation, which comes from internal enjoyment of an activity, and extrinsic motivation, which is driven by external rewards or punishment. The two can interact in unexpected ways, as illustrated by the overjustification effect: when external rewards are introduced for an activity already intrinsically enjoyed, they can undermine the original intrinsic motivation, and once rewards are removed, interest may disappear. At a more physiological level, drive reduction theory proposes that biological needs (such as hunger) create aroused tension states (drives) that motivate behavior to restore homeostasis. Finally, the Yerkes-Dodson law adds nuance to how arousal affects performance: simple tasks benefit from higher arousal levels, while complex tasks require lower arousal for peak functioning, producing an inverted-U relationship between arousal and performance.
