Assessment For and Of Learning

Assessments fall into two broad categories that serve very different purposes. Formative assessment is ongoing, low-stakes evaluation used during instruction to monitor student learning and inform teaching adjustments. It is assessment for learning because its primary purpose is to guide the next steps in instruction. Summative assessment, by contrast, is evaluative measurement administered after a unit or course to determine the extent to which learning objectives have been met, as with final exams or standardized tests. It is assessment of learning because it measures achievement after the fact.

Formative assessment takes many forms in the classroom. Common strategies include exit tickets completed at the end of a lesson, think-pair-share discussions, one-minute papers, quizzes, thumbs-up checks for quick understanding, and structured peer feedback. These tools give teachers immediate insight into student understanding and create what is often called a formative assessment loop: teach, assess, analyze the results, and adjust instruction accordingly. The data produced by these assessments is also essential for differentiated instruction, since it helps teachers identify which students need reteaching, which are ready for enrichment, and how to regroup learners for the next lesson.

Timely feedback is critical in formative assessment because it allows students to identify and correct misconceptions before they become entrenched, reinforcing correct understanding while learning is still fresh. Rubrics support both formative and summative assessment by providing scoring guides with clear criteria and performance levels, making expectations transparent and ensuring consistent, objective evaluation of student work. Together, these practices help teachers answer two complementary questions: Are my students learning right now, and did they ultimately master what I set out to teach?
