Differentiated Instruction and Scaffolding

Differentiated instruction is a teaching approach in which educators adjust content, process, product, or learning environment to meet the diverse needs of individual learners. According to Tomlinson's widely used model, the four elements a teacher can differentiate are content (what is taught), process (how it is learned), product (how mastery is demonstrated), and the learning environment itself. Differentiating by readiness, for example, often involves tiered assignments that present the same essential concept at varying levels of complexity so that each student is appropriately challenged without being overwhelmed or under-stimulated.

Scaffolding is one of the most important tools within a differentiated classroom. Drawing on Vygotsky's concept of the Zone of Proximal Development, scaffolding refers to temporary supports that an instructor provides and then gradually removes as students gain independence. The ZPD is the gap between what a learner can do alone and what they can do with guidance, and effective scaffolding targets exactly that zone to maximize growth. Common scaffolding techniques include modeling, think-alouds, graphic organizers, sentence starters, checklists, and guided questions. The "I Do, We Do, You Do" model captures this gradual release of responsibility: the teacher first models a task, then students practice with support, and finally they perform independently.

Ongoing assessment is the engine that keeps differentiation responsive rather than guesswork. Through frequent checks of understanding, teachers gauge where each student stands, regroup learners, adjust pacing, and modify materials accordingly. Scaffolds should be faded gradually as students demonstrate increasing competence, ensuring that supports do not become permanent crutches. In this way, differentiation and scaffolding work together: assessment data identifies what each learner needs, scaffolding supplies the right amount of temporary help, and the eventual removal of those supports produces independent learners.
