Effective curriculum planning begins with the end in mind. Backward design, developed by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe in Understanding by Design, reverses the usual planning sequence by starting with what students should learn and working backward to determine how to teach it. Stage 1 identifies the desired results, including goals, standards, and essential questions, which are open-ended, thought-provoking questions that guide inquiry and help students uncover deeper meaning. Stage 2 determines acceptable evidence, meaning the assessments that will show whether students have met those goals. Stage 3 plans the learning experiences and instruction that will help students reach the targets. This approach is considered more effective than traditional lesson planning because it ensures that assessments and activities are aligned with learning goals from the start, preventing the common problem of activity-oriented teaching that lacks clear purpose.
Learning objectives are the foundation of any well-designed lesson. A well-written learning objective is a specific, measurable statement describing what students will be able to do after instruction, often written using the ABCD format (Audience, Behavior, Condition, Degree) or evaluated against SMART criteria: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Because objectives use observable verbs such as analyze, compare, or construct, teachers can directly assess whether students have met them, unlike vague goals built around terms like understand or know. These verbs typically come from Bloom's taxonomy, which signals the cognitive complexity expected, ranging from list at the Remember level to design at the Create level. Backward design uses this alignment deliberately: objectives are established first, and assessments and activities are then designed to measure and support them.
Direct instruction and mastery learning represent two of the most established structured teaching approaches. Direct instruction is a teacher-centered, explicit method that follows a clear sequence: review prior learning, present new material, guide practice with feedback, provide independent practice, and assess or review. It is most effective for teaching well-defined, foundational knowledge and skills where step-by-step procedures or factual content must be mastered. Mastery learning, associated with Benjamin Bloom, takes the additional step of requiring students to demonstrate a high level of proficiency on a topic before moving on. Bloom's underlying belief was that nearly all students can achieve mastery given sufficient time and appropriate instruction. When students do not meet proficiency on the first attempt, they receive corrective instruction and additional practice, such as reteaching, tutoring, or alternative activities, followed by a second assessment. Because of this reliance on frequent checks, mastery learning depends heavily on formative assessment to determine readiness to progress.
